Danish Maritime Community Seeks to Attract Foreign Owners
The Danish maritime community is campaigning for a series of initiatives it hopes will strengthen its shipping industry.
The Danish Shipowners' Association has submitted a proposal to the EU designed to allow for more foreign-owned, Danish-operated vessels to opt into its tonnage tax scheme.
Denmark's tonnage tax system currently allows for 75 percent of ships to be foreign-owned as long as they are Danish operated. The association wants to increase that percentage to 90 percent.
The country's tonnage tax system is unique from others in that allows for vessels to be registered with non-Danish flags.
Denmark is also considering legislative reform that would extend ship registration eligibility to foreign owners [x].
