MLC, Regulations Discussions Continue at CMA Shipping 2013
Maritime regulations including the upcoming Maritime Labor Convention (MLC) continue to serve as a major discussion theme at Shipping 2013.
The conference reconvened this morning with an opening panel on industry regulations, moderated by Joseph Cox of the US Chamber of Shipping of America. The Chamber presented its Rear Admiral Halert C. Shepheard Award to honorary guest and speaker Koji Sekimizu, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization. Rear Admiral Joseph A. Servidio, Assistant Commandant for Prevention Policy for the United States Coast Guard, Masamichi (Matt) Morooka, Chairman of ICS and Executive Vice President of NYK-Hinode Line, Ltd. and Christopher J. Wiernicki, President & CEO of ABS rounded out the panel. Quotes from the discussion were posted earlier today on our Twitter feed.
The morning sessions continued with a discussion of the Maritime Labor Convention moderated by Joseph Ludwiczak, General Secretary of Liberian Shipowners’ Council and featuring David Pascoe, Senior Vice President, Maritime Operations & Standards, Liberian Registry, David Heindel, Secretary-Treasurer of Seafarers International Union of North America - Seafarers and Peter Hinchliffe, Secretary General, International Chamber of Shipping. All speakers brought their own areas of expertise to the discussion, sharing the common goal that seafarer well-being is good for the industry.
