Bermuda Registry Launches London Office
Bermuda is opening a ship registry office in the United Kingdom.
Lloyd's List reports:
Minister of tourism flies to London to launch the register’s UK office
Bermuda’s minister of tourism development and transport Shawn Crockewell flew to London this week to open the UK office of Bermuda Department Maritime Administration.
The satellite office will take advantage of the time difference between the UK, Europe and Bermuda and provide efficient and cost-effective ship survey, certification and registration services to European shipowners.
DMA’s London-based surveyor team will service ships operating in the UK and Europe, as well as Bermuda ships calling into Middle East, Indian subcontinent, the Far East and Australasia.
The satellite office will accept registration and mortgage documentation for immediate registration.
After years of steady growth the number of Bermuda-registered commercial vessels and yachts has grown between 10% to 12% between 2010 and 2013.
DMA says its physical presence in London is a natural evolution for the register, whose ships are deemed to be British ships.
The Bermuda register is based on an English law-based system, with a final appeal to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council sitting in London.
The opening of the London office is the stepping stone for opening a DMA representative office in Asia although talks are still at a preliminary stage.
